How advertising works

How advertising works

Advertising affects all of us every day. You might see an average of 5,000 media ads per day! They exist in many formats:

  • Print
  • Commercials
  • Movies (product placement)
  • Celebrity branding
  • Billboards
  • Banner ads
  • Taxi cabs
  • Virtually all public surfaces
  • YouTube
  • Podcasts
  • Web search engines

Ads are meant to teach you about new products and services. They are a tool that companies use to make you buy something you didnt know you wanted.

Stick to your values

Companies want you to buy thier stuff. They try to convince you that thier products is important and will help your life. They work to change your values and get you to buy things you don’t need or never thought of before you saw the ads. Advertising has the potential to redefine what you value and think is important to you. Their work is to convince you to spend your money on their product.

When you have strong and intentional values, you will concentrate on what is most important to you and avoid the temptation of things you dont need.

Peer pressure works

Peer pressure affects everyone…we all want to fit in and belong! It’s key that you’re aware of it, and remind yourself of your values and priorites.  You’re the only one who knows what to spend money on. When you make a budget, you’ll be more certian on what you need and be able to stick to your essentials like food and shelter.

Insider Tip
Clothing is something you need, but a certain designer or brand is a want. Keep needs and wants separate to avoid the pitfall of peer pressure.
