Empowering youth in and from government care in BC

New Housing Supports Rent Supplement Applications Open Oct 17th – Nov 1st!

The application period for Rent Supplements opens on October 17, 2022 at 8:30 AM and closes on November 1, 2022 at 11:59 PM.

Earlier this year the province announced it’s investing $35 million over the next 3 years into programs and services for young adults from government care to better support them as they transition into adulthood.

A part of this commitment includes the introduction of a new MCFD Rent Supplement Program. The new program helps young adults from care (both MCFD and ICFS Agency) who are ready to live independently, afford their rent. Eligible young adults will be able to apply for a $600-a-month rent supplement to assist them with rental costs in the private housing market as they transition to adulthood. Over 50% of the rent supplements will be available to Indigenous young adults.

Please check the Youth Transitions website regularly for more information.

Other recently announced transition supports for young adults include:
No-Limit Earnings Exemption for Agreements with Young Adults Program (AYA)

  • In August 2022, MCFD introduced a no-limit earnings exemption. Effectively a young adult’s employment income, including self-employment opportunities and wage replacement programs, such as EI and WCB, are now exempt when determining the level of funding they will receive through AYA.

AYA Life-Skills: Removal of the Preapproved Provider List

  • We heard from youth and young adults that one of the biggest barriers they face when opting for life-skills programs is the requirement to select from a list of pre-approved providers. Effective immediately, the pre-approved list will no longer apply.

Please stay tuned for information on upcoming Youth Transitions supports and services:

  • This year, MCFD will also be bringing on transition workers to help youth and young adults navigate their transition from care. More information will be available soon.
  • In 2023, MCFD will introduce funding to support young people in accessing life-skills, cultural, and skills training programs, and enhanced dental and medical benefits, including counselling.
  • In 2024, MCFD will seek legislative changes to expand program eligibility, and introduce an unconditional income supplement of $1,250 until age 20. Monthly funding of up to $1,250 until the young adult’s 27th birthday will be maintained for those participating in eligible programming, and the duration of support will be increased to 84 months (up from 48 months).
